IAEA's Director General sets out challenges with special concerns for the region

2014-09-22

Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has become "more and more convinced" of the vital importance of science and technology for sustainable development in his visits to the agency's member states all over the world.

Speaking at the 58th Regular Session of the IAEA's General Conference that was held last month in Vienna, he also set out key challenges facing the world in the coming decades in the nuclear field.

Among them, Amano urged countries to strengthen their safeguards frameworks. He particularly raised concerns for the region: "As my report on Application of IAEA Safeguards in the Middle East shows, there remain fundamental differences of view among countries of the region on this issue. It has therefore not been possible to make further progress in fulfilling my mandate from the General Conference in this area. I will continue my consultations,"
